Anyone wishing to sell or authorise the sale of alcohol by retail on licensed premises must hold a personal licence. To become a personal licence holder, an individual should obtain a regulated personal licence holder’s qualification. These industries can include pubs, retailers, large night clubs, cafés, restaurants, hotels and sports facilities.

A personal licence allows the holder to sell or authorise the sale of alcohol. A personal licence is also needed to apply to become a designated premises supervisor (DPS). Licensed premises can have more than one personal licence holder.
